The most remarkable thing about this book is that it could have been written. It is the culmination of a stupendous effort that lasted 10 years and spread across half the globe. Planning began in 1964. In 1968-1969, 48 000 households were surveyed in 12 study areas in Canada, the United States, Argentina, England, Finland, Poland, and Yugoslavia. Data analysis was completed to 1974. The objective of the study was to see how the use of health services is influenced by perceived need and available resources.
