Understanding the fundamental biophysics of cardiac function would seem to be a self-evident need, not only for physiologists but also for clinicians concerned with the actions of the heart in health and disease. It is therefore something of a surprise that in the preface the author is almost apologetic about the need for a text aimed at bridging the gap between fundamental cellular processes and overall function of the heart. The aim of the book is indeed worthy; how successful is the product?
