The area of clinical disturbances of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance had lacked a comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date textbook until very recently. The Kidney, edited by Drs. Brenner and Rector, went a very long way towards filling that need. On the other hand, there are always multiple points of view in such a large field and one would expect that a similar text written by different authors might be complementary and useful. Moreover, the encyclopedic nature of The Kidney leaves room for a more easily readable and less detailed work.
