The supreme court's decision on 28 June in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1) admitted Mr. Bakke to the first-year class at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. That is the clearest consequence of the decision. The spokesmen of various factions have rushed to acclaim the decision, to denounce it, or to accept it as a peculiarly democratic compromise.
