This review is the result of a symposium, "Human Diseases Caused by Viruses: Recent Developments," held at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. The objective of the symposium was, in the words of the editors, "to present basic and current information for clinicians—particularly family physicians, pediatricians, and internists—that would have applicability in practice." That objective is adequately met. The 16 chapters—by 19 contributors, most of whom are well-recognized authorities in one or more areas of virus disease—are brief, generally complete, and contain information that has yet to appear in other textbooks.
