Aimed at providing doctors and nutritionists working in developing countries with an understanding of protein-energy malnutrition in children. Topics include ecology and pathogenesis; pathology and pathophysiology; interaction between infection and protein-energy malnutrition; treatment of the severe syndrome; long-term effects; assessment of nutritional status in less severely affected children; and prevention and rehabilitation. Authors were all members of the scientific staff of the Medical Research Council in either the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit in Jamaica or the Child Nutrition Unit in Uganda; each chapter was drafted by two authors representing experiences from both areas.
