It seems that there was little attention given during the Symposium to prevention of disease through vaccination. Although there is funding at the level apparently required, there is need for more basic research in improving host response in those under two years of age, in respect to bacterial vaccines—through altering antigens. Although Haemophilus influenzae b was singled out by Dr. Nelson, the same principles obtain for pneumococcal and meningococcal disease control since the peak age incidence and mortality for all of these diseases is in children under 2 years of age.
