The English translation of a book originally published in the Netherlands in 1969. The author, a psychiatrist, questions the interpretation of the Hippocratic oath that all human lives must be unconditionally saved or prolonged by whatever means available. Throughout the book are presented case histories to illustrate the author's proposal: "that the rapid technological advances in the science of medicine require a new and fundamental ethical code."
