The origin of the malignant "hairy cells" of leukemic reticuloendotheliosis remains controversial (1). These cells are frequently capable of latex phagocytosis and glass or nylon adherence and also may possess surface receptors for cytophilic antibody, all properties of monocytes. However, they also possess receptors for complement (C3) and aggregated immunoglobulin, characteristics of both B lymphocytes and monocytes, and may synthesize membrane-bound surface immunoglobulins, a feature thought to be unique to B lymphocytes. The "hairy cell" may be derived from a unique, phagocytic subpopulation of B lymphocytes (1).
