Now that a decade of experience has witnessed the growth of coronary artery bypass surgery to the point of consuming a major portion of health care resources, it seems appropriate to examine this procedure from the viewpoint of a clinician managing patients with coronary artery disease. This monograph is part of the series Topics in Cardiovascular Disease edited by Drs. E. Sonnenblick and W. W. Parmley and is directed to cardiologists, surgeons, internists, and general practitioners who refer patients for coronary artery surgery. In this context, it is an informative overview of the role of surgery in coronary artery disease.
