The observation that "every image is a collection of signals which the initiated transforms into symbols" is one of the bits of wisdom that enliven Bessis' textbook on hematologic morphology, first published in French in 1976 and comfortably translated into this English edition by Brecher.
Photography is reinforced by skillfully hand-drawn illustrations, paintings as well as line drawings, to present in correlation a variety of morphologic techniques, from conventional light microscopy to scanning and transmission electron microscopy to phase and interference microscopy.
