In mid-November 1978 over 500 members of the international scientific community met at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta to hear more than 50 papers on all aspects of Legionnaires' disease. By 8 December, Drs. Albert Balows and David Fraser, Center for Disease Control, and Dr. Elias Abrutyn, one of our associate editors, had read the manuscripts of these papers and drafted recommendations for revision. By 15 December these recommendations had been sent to authors. By 10 January 1979 virtually all of the revised manuscripts had been received in the Editorial Office. The first paper went to press
