Undertaking a comprehensive volume on clinical cardiology is much like attempting to chart an ocean-the currents of emphasis are constantly changing, the landmarks are evolving, and the main routes of commerce exert their influence. A textbook can be encyclopedic, can attempt to look at all sides of a controversy and can exhaustively provide one-line summaries of the recent literature. In so doing, it can develop a reputation as a source for resolving disputes while otherwise remaining secure on the library shelf.
