The author, a founder and the present director of the History of Medicine Program at the Harvard Medical School, traces the history of medical inventions and techniques and the people behind them. Dr. Reiser concludes "that modern medicine has now evolved to a point at which diagnostic judgments based on 'subjective evidence' (the patient's sensations and the physician's observations) are in danger of being supplanted by judgments founded on 'objective evidence': that provided by laboratory procedures and mechanical and electronic devices."
