To the editor: We read the report of Robbins and Rose in the May 1979 (1) with an interest heightened by our own experience. At our institution, the partial thromboplastin time is now measured in nearly all surgical and many medical patients, regardless of the clinical setting. After the first 15 months of this practice, we reviewed the partial thromboplastin times of approximately 2600 patients and found that the large majority of abnormal values could have been predicted from the admission history and physical examination, as judged by a retrospective chart review.
