The first edition of this book, published in 1974, was widely used by medical students and house staff. The entire book has been updated and several sections rewritten reflecting the significant advances in current technology that have occurred in the past few years. It is intended to provide information on the modern laboratory methods currently available for diagnosing endocrine disorders. Even so, some of the updated material is dated. There is no justification for routine thyroid scanning with iodine-131 when imaging can be done with lower radiation exposure and no loss of image quality by using iodine-123.
