One approach to the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease is to identify and subsequently modify risk factors in young persons. In recent years the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has encouraged, through its High Blood Pressure in the Young program, research designed to identify precursors and associated correlates of hypertension in populations of young people. Seventeen of the grantees presented a 1-day work-inprogress symposium at the conclusion of the 1979 annual meeting of the American Heart Association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research.
