Osler pointed out that the physician who knew all that one could know about syphilis and the problems in differential diagnosis posed by its manifold lesions necessarily knew all of clinical medicine. Since his time, great improvements in diagnosis of syphilis at all stages and the serendipitous benefits of wide use of antibiotics have pushed the late lesions of syphilis into obscurity.
