Tanikawa, through use of a text-atlas format, has continued to report his studies on the ultrastructure of the human liver and its alteration by disease. There are 242 figures in this edition. In contrast to his first edition, where all of the electron micrographs were the author's, Tanikawa has borrowed liberally from Diagnostic Electron Microscopy, volume 2, (John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1979) for his illustrations.
