Dr. Platt's atlas and textbook provides 92 color plates, primarily on blood and marrow morphology, in addition to an extensive discussion of laboratory instrumentation and general hematology. This atlas varies considerably in quality. The technical description of some of the laboratory procedures (platelet aggregation, for example) and the discussion of instruments are excellent and usually are not included in other texts. The section on electron microscopy and chromosome abnormalities is concise and well written; however, the illustrations depicting cell morphology in many instances are of too low a magnification to demonstrate detail and lack sharpness.
