Much of the literature on "professional socialization" of physicians has failed to capture the attention of the profession itself. There are several reasons for this: the writing tends to be obfuscated; the research designs of many studies fail to control for investigator bias; and there is an unbalanced emphasis on the ills of the system with neglect of the healthy features. But how physicians develop attitudes and values is important, and one should pay attention to any new insights into this process.
