The preface to the first edition of this book, published in 1972, indicated that it was conceived as a "concise systematized description of antibiotics in current use in antibacterial chemotherapy." Since then, it has grown in length, subject matter (now including antituberculous, antifungal, and antiviral drugs), and authorship (now two people).
Each chapter consists of a description of a few closely related agents; some chapters are devoted to just one drug. The format is traditional, encompassing in-vitro activity, pharmacologic attributes, mode of action, toxicity, and clinical use; the writing is crisp and clear.
