To the editor: It is unfortunate that Dr. Calin detracts from his many excellent contributions on the importance of the HLA system in rheumatic disease (1) by concluding his recent article, "HLA-B27: To Type or Not to Type?" (2) with the caveat that "the clinical usefulness of HLA-B27 typing appears to be minimal." It may be appropriate that he uses the election year of 1980 as license to present his cause as one of justifiable cost containment. It does not, however, justify using "data" such as "one California laboratory did over 17 000 HLA-B27 tests in 1978!" for its obvious
