Forty-four authors, each an acknowledged expert in his field, have collaborated to produce a valuable report on contemporary understanding of mechanisms involved in "metabolic" diseases. The emphasis on mechanism is so pervasive in these essays that the editors have elected to abandon the former title of the book, Duncan's Diseases of Metabolism.
