The massive campaign launched early in the 1960s to eradicate smallpox in India was truly "an event. . . historic in the annals of medicine and public health," as noted in the foreword to this detailed account of that campaign. With the publication of this detailed history, the World Health Organization may very well have given us a blue-print of how to mobilize national and international resources for future campaigns against major health problems. An important document for the history of clinical microbiology and public health.
