Our epidemiologic knowledge of functional bowel disorders has recently been expanded by the interesting finding that gastrointestinal symptoms occur with considerable frequency among healthy, largely uncomplaining British adults of both sexes and a wide span of ages (1). Structured interviews of 301 adults, including medical technicians, nurses, hospital clerks, persons attending a clinic screening for coronary artery disease, and residents of housing projects for the elderly, showed that nearly one third of the subjects had experienced gastrointestinal symptoms in the preceding year.
