Considering how difficult it can be to do collaborative research with someone across town or even down the hall, The Seven Countries Study, an international prospective investigation of 16 cohorts of middle-aged men using standardized methods, represents an outstanding achievement in coronary heart disease epidemiology. Mainly 10-year follow-up data collected in Finland, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, the United States (5-year data), and Yugoslavia are presented.
Although most of the 12 763 subjects lived in rural areas and were not selected to be representative of entire countries, the wide disparity in their 10-year coronary heart disease death rates correlated well
