A concise text that concentrates, after an opening general review of cardiovascular physiology, on function in disease states: diseases imposing pressure load or a volume load on the heart; disorders of contractility; arrhythmias; and systemic and pulmonary hypertension. Six appendices present the principles and methods of cardiac catheterization, pressure measurement, oximetry, cardiac output measurement, quantitative left ventriculography, and coronary arteriography. Attention is called to the logical symbolic system used to indicate the quantity under discussion, with superscript and subscript modifiers for the main symbol to indicate precisely and fully the nature of the quantities—for example, Plved instead of LVEDP.
