To the editor: In the excellent review of the Seventh International Conference on Calcium-Regulating Hormones (1), our observations on the metabolic bone diseases associated with total parenteral nutrition were misquoted. Although we did observe low serum levels of 1,25 (OH)2-vitamin D in a substantial number of patients on long-term total parenteral nutrition, we did not give parenteral calcitriol and have no data on whether a beneficial effect may occur. Since intestinal function is markedly impaired in these patients, we have awaited the availability of parenteral calcitriol before undertaking such a therapeutic trial.
