Interest in a nonoperative diagnostic approach to thyroid nodules recently has been rekindled by the report of excessive thyroid neoplasms, both benign and malignant, found in a large number of patients who had received external radiation to the head and neck (1). Certain risk factors increase the suspicion of malignancy in a solitary thyroid nodule (2). First is a history of radiation; the risk of thyroid carcinoma is substantially increased by exposure to radiation, 25 to 30 years previously (3), estimates ranging from a two-fold to a one hundred-fold increase.
