To the editor: I read with great interest the article by Dr. Beehler and colleagues (1) on parathyroid hormone (PTH) suppression by cimetidine in the uremic patient. I would like to comment on the mechanism related to the suppression.
Judging from the observation that PTH suppression was produced by cimetidine without significant change in serum calcium or phosphate, the effect of cimetidine on circulating PTH appears not to be through a mechanism related to calcium, phosphate, or vitamin D metabolites but to be based on the decreased PTH secretion.
