Two hundred fourteen case vignettes illustrate use of the diagnostic categories in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) published in 1980 and commented on editorially in this journal by Dr. George B. Murray (Ann Intern Med. 1980;93:631-2). Each case vignette and accompanying text includes a clinical summary, the rationale for the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, any diagnostic uncertainties, and the appropriate DSM-III category.
