To the editor: In the May issue there appeared an interesting description of an outbreak of primary tuberculosis in an extended-care facility (1). That such work is being done in an extended-care facility by a well-respected investigator shows nicely that within the extended-care facility and the geriatric patient population there are research questions that need attention and lend themselves to investigation. Dr. Stead's paper shows what National Institute on Aging Director Robert Butler means when he refers to research in the nursing home (2).
