Every now and then in the literature of medicine, a text appears that seems certain to become a tradition, if not a classic. The Smith/Thier treatise on pathophysiology is, I believe, such a text. It is to be the first volume in a proposed International Textbook of Medicine triology. The second volume is the text on infectious diseases edited by Braude, Davis, and Fierer. The third is the Cecil Textbook of Medicine.
