CHARLES H. WHITE, PH.D.
To the editor: The article "The Shortage of Hospital Nurses: A New Perspective" (1), is not a new perspective at all. California Hospital Association has studied the nursing shortage extensively over the past 5 years and published 25 to 30 reports. Sometimes, the reality our member hospitals describe to us and the data they report agree with the remarks of Aiken and colleagues and in some instances they disagree rather sharply.
Perhaps Aiken and colleagues are attempting to present a national picture, seeking general, rather than specific truths. But some of their statements simply are not believable in California.
