Since the dramatic 1976 outbreak in Philadelphia, Legionnaires' disease has become increasingly recognized as a common cause of pneumonia. Over 700 articles dealing with this disease and its etiologic agent Legionella pneumophila, have appeared in medical journals. It was the authors' intention to consolidate these findings into a single monograph as a state-of-the-art review. Can such a review in a book form be useful in a field that is so rapidly changing, especially when basic information concerning the reservoir and mode of transmission of the organism is still unclear?
