The editors are to be congratulated on the scholarly excellence of their new textbook on rheumatology. The first section of this ambitious work is titled, "Scientific Basis of Rheumatology," and runs to 349 pages. Here one finds an extraordinarily detailed account of the inflammatory response as well as articles on the immune response, biology and biomechanics of the joint, composition and metabolism of connective tissue (including bone), and purine metabolism.
