Emergency medicine is a rapidly growing new specialty as measured by the number of residency training programs, practitioners, and new texts. The editors of this book intend to supplement currently available texts. In their view, existing texts primarily cover common problems in emergency departments such as abdominal pain, chest pain, wound management, and poisonings and so they wish to present material on less common problems unique to emergency medicine. The editors stress that emergency medicine as a specialty will be enhanced by emphasis on these areas that overlap less with traditional specialties.
