This is a marvelous set of books, destined to become a classic. A need for an exhaustive examination of infectious disease in children has existed for many years. A physician interested in learning about these illnesses was often forced to gather the information from journal articles. In general, these sources provided relatively few data on illnesses not commonly encountered in North America. This is not to say that fine books aimed at the student or practitioner of pediatrics were unavailable; Krugman and Katz's Infectious Diseases of Children is one. But no one book existed that was sufficiently broad in scope
