Much that is healthy in American society is due to the right balance between public investment in public good and private investment for private profit. For two centuries we have seen the advantages of even-handed support of both needs. But in some periods the balance has been tipped too far by heavy hands on one side or the other. We face that threat today. In the present political climate in Washington, advantages are being thrown to the side of private profit and at the expense of public good. Irreplaceable natural resources are being threatened by the government's quickly mounted assaults
