To the editor: The article by Reiner and associates in the February issue (1) presents evidence to support de facto parenteral transmission as a source of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in homosexual men. Previously published data (2) support this hypothesis, suggesting that a similar mode of transmission may occur during heterosexual relations. Among American troops in Thailand there was a significant association between reported penile abrasions at the time of coitus and acquisition of HBV infection (2).
