Diagnostic radiology has produced a spectacular variety of sophisticated machinery to evaluate regional anatomy and pathophysiology. This array of diagnostic techniques, although potentially enhancing patient care, has increased the complexity required to choose the best diagnostic strategy. These developments have lead to a renewed interest in evaluating the merits of alternative strategic choices. The recent inauguration of the Society for Medical Decision Making is indicative of the need to develop the science of diagnostic decision analysis.
