An outrage, the purists will thunder. How can one reduce the subtleties of ethical analysis to a slim how-to manual, obviously modeled after the "cookbooks" that medical students and house officers carry in the pockets of their white coats? But the purists are not allowing for the advances in the field of medical ethics over the last decade. The mature discipline no longer needs to have it both ways—insisting that medical ethics is indeed relevant to clinical practice, and yet still intoning that ethics cannot give final or conclusive answers to complex, practical problems.
