To the editor: We have recently seen two patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were also asplenic, and read with interest the report of asplenia in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (1). Less well documented is the association of rheumatoid arthritis and asplenia.
A 57-year-old white woman presented with disseminated ophthalmic herpes zoster. The patient had a 1-year history of symmetrical small joint pain, and examination showed swelling with synovitis. Rheumatoid factor was 1:640. Serum protein electrophoresis showed a polyclonal gammopathy with normal quantitative immunoglobulins. Results of delayed hypersensitivity skin tests were normal. Peripheral smear showed Howell-Jolly bodies and thrombocytosis. A
