To the editor: Greganti and associates (1) surveyed the faculty, fellows, and residents of a department of medicine to ascertain the relative importance attributed to each of eight personal characteristics shown during interviews by house staff candidates. These investigators found that "professional attitude" was regarded as the single most important personal characteristic for candidate evaluation. We collected data that suggests that professional attitude, as shown in overt behavior, influences actual interview evaluations and subsequent selection decisions of medical school faculties.
