To the editor: The editorial by Burns (1) on manpower needs for academic medicine emphasizes intellectual stimulation as an incentive for research activities. We evaluated intramural research incentives by correlating the publication output of our Department of Medicine faculty with sectional organization, age of the faculty, and changing career goals.
From 1 July 1975 through 30 June 1980, 56 fulltime faculty members had been employed in our department for least 2 years. The department has nine subspecialty sections and a general internal medicine section.
