To the editor: Burman (1) has managed to add another paper to his bibliography and reduce the percentage of multiauthored papers. However, he seems naive about the difficulty of deciding who should be an author or in what order.
As a laboratory head, I may have a technician who produces 96.3% of the data for a project, but less than 0.5% of the work in terms of design, analysis, and writing the papers. Without the technician, the project would not get done; should the technician be excluded? If so, how is this person to be motivated for the next project?
