To the editor: Eisenberg and associates (1) commendably correlated findings on normal abdominal radiographs with clinical features in a large number of emergency room patients with abdominal pain. But because patients were not subsequently seen, two important points remain unknown: the accuracy of the clinical and radiologic diagnosis assigned to each patient, and whether the radiographs "directly affected patient management," said to be the primary goal of their study.
The radiologists apparently had clinical information when reviewing the radiographs, which duplicates normal practice, but at the same time the interpretation was probably influenced by the clinical information. But even if
