It is a pleasure to read a well-written textbook. Drs. Guenter and Welch have improved, if that is possible, on the first edition of Pulmonary Medicine. The first part of the book is an introduction to "respirology," and deals with basic physiology and normal functions of the respiratory tract and methods of measuring these functions. An appropriate addition to this section is a chapter on the respiratory pump. The normal mechanisms of nerve function, feed-back stimuli, chemical control systems, and muscular functions as they apply to respiration are discussed in light of new information.
