Current knowledge regarding what people should or should not do regarding diet and hypertension was discussed. Actions are relatively clear for persons with hypertension. Obvious measures are weight control for obese patients, increased potassium intake for those on diuretic therapy, and decreased sodium intake for most patients. For persons with mild hypertension these measures may avert the need for drug therapy.
Preventive measures for the general population with normal blood pressures were seen as less certain. Avoidance of weight gain and excessive sodium intake may be of value for persons having a family history of hypertension, but no definitive studies
